Welcome to our September e-newsletter.

Welcome to our Summer edition of the GTA Lamplighters e-Newsletter.  We hope everyone has had an enjoyable and safe summer visiting with family and friends or finally getting to those postponed travel plans.

Social Events

By Ros Craig

The GTA Lamplighter I.O.C. is working hard to keep our members connected and provide opportunities to enjoy each other’s company. We are only as good as our participation. If there are any events you would like to see happen, please contact us at GTALamplighters@gmail.com

I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer, it is passing too quickly. We have had great social events this year. We had a group attend the Herongate Dinner Theatre on April 3rd; it was an excellent time.

On June 21st, four of us went on a bus trip to see Oh What A Night. We had transportation, buffet lunch and then a fabulous show. Great fun.

On July 19th, we hosted our first picnic at Morningside Park. We had over fifty people attend. Lunch was prepared by Community Events. They did a fantastic job.

We had Melissa Alphonso teach us how to Bollywood Dance, it was a blast and so much fun.

We had a lime and spoon race and other games. There were draws for gift certificates. Thank you, Warren Dickert, Retiree Coordinator,  for providing extra prizes. It was much appreciated.

On August 24th, Enbridge hosted a Retiree Luncheon for those of us who retired from Enbridge. There were updates from the new president,  Michele Harradence , SVP & President Gas regarding areas of growth and challenges within Enbridge. Michael Wagle, Director SCM GDS, provided information on activities within Enbridge such as an annual Safety Gala, challenges, and updates on projects.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch. It was wonderful to see our fellow retirees and so many friends.

On August 31, we hosted a BBQ in Oro-Medonte, located between Barrie and Orillia.

The food was good, the weather co-operated, and the company was excellent. We all had a wonderful day catching up with each other.

We are hosting Meet and Greets on September 20th at Heydenshore Park in Whitby and October 18th at Wishing Well Park in Scarborough.

We are also working on Niagara Wine Tour for some time this fall. More details to follow.

November and December, we will have our Swiss Chalet Christmas get together. Dates are as follows:

  •  Markham, Nov 15
  • Toronto, Nov 22
  • Whitby, Nov 30
  • Barrie, Dec 7

Reminder

Tell Us About Your Passion or Story

By Ros Craig

One of the most positive comments we have had regarding the GTA Lamplighters is how it allows our retirees to connect with each other. Personally, I love catching up with how everyone is doing and what is happening in their lives. Experts tell us that as we age, social interaction is an important part of healthy aging.

Tells us what makes you happy. What is your hobby? Do you volunteer? We all love to hear about each other. We want to publish your stories in our quarterly newsletter so that everyone can celebrate your success.

Member Updates

For each newsletter, we reach out to members for their stories of what they have been up to.  Whether its travel, spending time with the grand kids, volunteer work or what ever, we provide their short summaries. Its a great way to hear about colleagues we haven't seen for awhile.

John & Betty Smith

We have been retired for 16 years now and moved to Cobourg upon retirement to escape the hustle and bustle of the GTA.

Since retirement we have continued to travel, wintered away but have not forgotten our friends at the Gas Works. John golfs year-round and includes fellow retirees when here in Canada and Betty volunteers here in Cobourg.

We are blessed with four grandsons and see them often. Our son Steven works for Enbridge in regulation, and our daughter Lisa is a schoolteacher, and they both live in Durham.

We wish our past colleagues all the best, good health, and longevity.

Steve Rogers

Marlie and I are well. We moved last year to Lakepoint Village, Ramara, into a new bungalow built with people our age in mind. We spend time on our boat moored at Baer Harbourview marina in Atherley. We golf weekly with groups from our new community. We spend the warm months here and the cool months at our condominium in Florida.

Our son and his family live in Georgina and our daughter and her family live in Florida. We get to spend time with our family here over the summer and our family in Florida over the winter. Our youngest grandson is in high school and the three older are in college / university. It is amazing how fast the time that brought us to this place, has passed.

Gunther Prattinger

Gunther is enjoying his retirement at his 100-year-old home in High Park, also known to him as the “money pit”. He is living the dream and looking forward to travelling again. He wants to visit Europe, Spain, France, England and Hungry.

Ivan Hunte

Ivan has been retired for nine years and still is in his home in Pickering. He is looking forward to visiting his beloved Barbados soon. Ivan has two grandchildren, a four-year-old girl, and a six-month-old grandson. They live in Etobicoke, he face times with them often. He enjoys gardening and is hoping to build a stone patio but is having a tough time getting a contractor.

Ann Andrews

Ann is active, happy, and living in Whitby.

Carmen Sorentino

Carmen lives in Stouffville and has a cottage at Rice Lake, he tries to go there as much as possible. He has grandsons 14 and 17. He is looking forward to travelling again. The family had wanted to go to Aruba to celebrate a 50th birthday, a 70th birthday and a 75th birthday but the prices are extremely high right now. He thinks he is going to wait to allow the prices to normalize.

Cathy Walton

My husband Pat and I were to leave for Amsterdam Saturday August 13, 2022, to do a river cruise along the Rhine to Basil Switzerland and then staying in Switzerland for 5 days before returning home. The cruise was cancelled due to low water levels.

We have been living in Brighton Ontario now for the past 3 years and love the community. We have four grandchildren, three in Toronto and one in Summerland BC which gives us the opportunity to visit BC at least once a year. Loving the retired life!

Brian and Melodie Scott

My wife, Melodie and I have been retired for almost 8 years. We have recently moved to a retirement community near Peterborough. We are enjoying meeting and speaking with our new neighbours.  We had been living more in the country on four acres and wanted to be closer to town.

We have two granddaughters (13 and 15) that stayed with us for a week.

We visited a sunflower farm near Beaverton. It was a first for all of us and we really enjoyed it.

Our last trip was to England and Scotland for 5 weeks in 2019. We had planned to return in 2020 but had to cancel.

We both have family there and are looking forward to traveling in the future.

Chris Pace

I left Consumers Gas in the 90s moving out west working for Centra Gas on Vancouver Island on their new computer system. I was offered a position with BC Gas, so we moved to the mainland, where I worked on their computer upgrade. I think, I set a record for working with three different gas companies.

We returned to Ontario moving to St Catharines where l worked for Canadian Tire, a company that had, like Consumers Gas, long term employees. As most people know the friendships that started in Consumers lasts for years, and as soon as I returned to Ontario, I was able to reconnect with them.

I finally retired, moving back to Scarborough to be closer to our family.

My oldest daughter and her family live in Pickering. My youngest who was living in Singapore, finally moved back to Canada with her family, and is now also living in Pickering. My oldest stepdaughter is currently in Italy on vacation, and the younger stepdaughter has just moved to a new home.

Jack and I recently celebrated 52 years of marriage, and we tell ourselves we have not changed. We now winter in the Canary islands and will be resuming our travels in December. Our combined family has grown from four daughters to include four sons- in-law, six grandchildren, one great grandchild and another on the way. Those of you that are lucky enough to be grandparents know how wonderful it is to be part of their lives, ours keeps us laughing and busy.

Roxanne Weatherill

Rox suffered from a brain aneurysm on June 29th, she was airlifted to Sunnybrook and underwent brain surgery on July 1 to correct it. She underwent additional medical adjustments to address some issues. Her partner, Hazel has been at her bedside every day and made all the necessary decisions for her care.

She has just been transferred to the hospital in Midland, they reside in Elmvale. Please keep Rox and Hazel in your thoughts and prayers.

Jim Miller

I have been busy since my retirement 7 years ago. I still work for Enbridge as a third-party Contractor for about 8 months a year.  Judy and I spend the winters in Siesta Key, Florida. Looking after my 96-year-old Mother and enjoying time with our four grandkids does also take up a lot of our time. We have a 2-week trip to Hawaii booked for November, our 3 months in Florida and our 3rd River Cruise in Europe booked for next September. Life is good!!!
