GTA Lamplighters is one of 13 Enbridge Retiree Clubs established throughout Ontario for legacy Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas.  These clubs operate separately from Enbridge Gas Distribution but the Company does give financial support to the clubs to assist with their functions and activities. With over 1800 registered members it provides an opportunity to stay connected and maintain the many friendships we established during our careers.

On May 9, Anne Whelan and I attended the Yearly Retiree Executive Meeting in London where representatives from these clubs got together.

The meeting was hosted by Jenn Thomlinson (Supervisor Corporate Citzenship , Internal Communications and Community Investment) and Warren Dickert (Retiree Coordinator).  It was an opportunity to recognize and thank the club leaders for their contribution to the retiree program and to feature their club’s activities.

As we embark on the second half of the year, we continue to work diligently on planning events for our club for the remaining year.

We have our Annual BBQ, Meet & Greets, our first ever Jay’s Game and of course our luncheons. For updates on these, refer to the details below and our website.

As one of the Co-Chairs of this Club it has been very rewarding working with a very respected and talented group of people that keep our club going.

I wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer.

Member Updates

For each newsletter, we reach out to members for their stories of what they have been up to.  Whether its travel, spending time with the grand kids, volunteer work or what ever, we provide their short summaries. Its a great way to hear about colleagues we haven't seen for awhile.

Heather and Wes McCLean

It is always nice to hear from Consumers Gas/Enbridge colleagues.

After 35 years of living in the Beach, Wes and I have relocated to Port Hope. We are now living in a loft style condominium in an old converted High School. Lots of history in this building with the original architectural integrity.

We continue to keep connected with friendships that we have forged over our forty plus years in the gas industry. We have come to realize that some of these relationships are now 50 years young.

Since retirement we have managed to have some memorable trips, scuba diving in Borneo and an African Safari. Last summer we spend a month in Britain with family. Wes was born in Ireland so after the COVID lockdown there was lots of family catching up to be done.

We have three grandchildren who keep us busy. One of our grandsons plays AAA hockey. We were able to enjoy time with him and his parents this past winter at the Pee Wee hockey tournament that was held in Quebec City. The tournament coincided with the Bonhomme Carnaval allowing us to share this once in a lifetime experience with him.

Hopefully, we can get caught up with many of our work colleagues at the summer BBQ.

Kelly Brown

I have to say that retiring is one of the best things I have ever done! I am sure you agree! Lol My family and I have been living in Ajax for 25 years now.

So, for my news: Both of my kids have just graduated from University. Now real life begins for them! As a graduation gift/wedding anniversary and first vacation since before covid we will be leaving May 10 for a 2-week trip to Italy, Turkey and Greece including a 7-day cruise. We are more than excited!

That is, it for now!

Joan Hurd

Hello from Joan Hurd in Uxbridge, Ontario.  It’s been many years since my retirement from Systems Customer Accounting, at VPC, Consumers Gas.  After my retirement from Consumers, I worked another three years at two different companies – a startup cable/telecom company and then a large telecom billing company.  I was always struck during those three years; how lucky I was to spend a 41-year career working at Consumers Gas/Enbridge.  It was always a friendly, co-operative environment, under great leadership, where everyone pulled together to get the job done.

I’m now enjoying my retirement years, spending time with family and friends here in Uxbridge.  My granddaughter and her husband and my new great grandson also live In Uxbridge.  I have another granddaughter who works for the City of Toronto who lives downtown, but to the delight of her grandparents, visits often.   We’re hoping that in the not-too-distant future my daughter and son-in-law will also be moving to this beautiful town.   We feel so lucky to have our family so close by.

I keep in touch with Lynn Tufford by phone each week, (she lives in B.C.) and regularly have lunch with Lesley King, Laura Hall, or Joan Ribbans.  (All are doing very well!)  After a year and a half of health concerns, I’m finally on the mend, and returning to meetings at the Stouffville Probus Club where there are members who are friends from my gas company days.  I’m also a member of the Uxbridge Probus Club.

Regrettably our travel days are over.  I truly miss our three months in Panama City Beach Florida that we did for 17 years.  But who knows!  Maybe a week or two to a sunny destination during our dismal winter months is in the cards for 2024!

Lee Armsden

I am loving retirement. Bob and I spent several summers in an RV park in Cobourg right at the lake, we loved it there. We enjoyed shopping for farm fresh fruits and vegetables.

Now with the loss of Bob, I try to keep busy by planning short trips with Year-Round Travel to keep busy and have something to look forward to.

I am enjoying life day by day and wish to say hi to my friends and past coworkers.

Jennifer Gomes

Since retirement in 2019, I’ve been blessed to help my daughter plan her wedding, create Kodak moments travelling with family and friends and continue to have meaningful friendships with former colleagues.  The GTA Lamplighters makes it easy to keep connected with these newsletters and engaging events. I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming bbq!

Wishing everyone a happy and safe summer!
