GTA LAMPLIGHTERS

June 2022 e-Newsletter

Anne Whelan - Vice Chair

Welcome to our new e-newsletter format.

We hope that you are as excited as we are about the latest events being planned by our social committee.

A big thanks to Ros Craig and her team for their hard work in arranging a variety of events! For a list of of what's planned see our Calendar page. Check out the fun we had previously on our Social Events page.

Also, a big thanks to Walter Matias who has been working diligently on this newsletter format, our new website and our recent Group Activity Poll!

We had a great response to the poll where members identified the type of Activity Groups they would like to participate in. See the results below.  We are working on next steps to connect members with similar interests together. Thanks to everyone that took the poll.

We are also very pleased to be able to update everyone on our members and what is currently happening in their lives.  Have a look at the  Member Updates section below. It is so interesting to hear what everyone is doing since they retired.  This is such a great way to stay connected with everyone!

We appreciate any feedback and are always looking for new ideas and ways to improve our club.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our first annual picnic on July 19th.

Enjoy your summer and enjoy the newsletter and website.

It was a lovely event. The lunch was delicious and the show was very entertaining. We had a small and intimate group that attended this event. We are hoping to arrange another similar event in the future.

Tell Us About Your Passion or Story

By Ros Craig

One of the most positive comments we have had regarding the GTA Lamplighters is how it allows our retirees to connect with each other. Personally, I love catching up with how everyone is doing and what is happening in their lives. Experts tell us that as we age, social interaction is an important part of healthy aging.

Tells us what makes you happy. What is your hobby? Do you volunteer? We all love to hear about each other. We want to publish your stories in our quarterly newsletter so that everyone can celebrate your success.

To get us started, Janice Napier has kindly shared her story about dog rescue. It is heart warming and anyone who has spent time with a rescue dog knows how lucky it is for both the dog and the new pet owners.

Volunteering to Save Dogs

by Janice Napier

When I retired in January 2013, I wanted to volunteer to fill in some of my “free” time. After traveling for a couple of years, it was time to figure out the type of volunteering I would love to do.

We have always been a dog loving family. Over the past 37 years we have raised six wonderful dogs from their puppy stage to their old age (usually having 3 dogs in the home). When our sweet 15-year-old Lhasa Apso (Kirby) passed away in November 2015, we decided to adopt another dog to join the our two yellow Labs. We have now raised 9 dogs!

When I started this journey, I did not know much about adopting a dog. I just knew we wanted to help a dog in need and show them that not all humans are cruel. There are so many animals who are looking for a loving and supportive home, how can you not want to adopt.

There were two major adopting sites (Petsmart Adoption and Pet Finder) who have all the information of the dogs available for adoption with the Rescue organizations. It is heartbreaking to see so many dogs (and cats) that need a home and to read some of their stories.

I found a Rescue organization through these sights to work on adopting. We adopted our dog, Juno, from Just Paws Animal Rescue in March 2016. Once adopted, I found my calling for volunteering – I have been volunteering with Just Paws for six years. I have a few volunteer roles – fostering, conducting home visits for potential adopting families, and as a foster liaison between the foster family and adopting family, plus other responsibilities.

This volunteer role has kept me very busy (and can be a bit stressful sometimes), but when I see so many dogs that have been saved and placed in loving homes, it is a great feeling. The volunteer role has been with the support of my family, Mike and Kyla!

Poll Survey Results

We conducted a member wide survey to determine if there was enough interest to develop various Activity Groups.  Based on the results below, it looks like we could potentially start several groups.  Our next steps is to connect those with a similar interest via a video call to discuss next steps.  For those who responded, please stay tuned.

Lighter Side of Life

It was mealtime on an airplane, and the flight attendant asked a passenger if he would like some dinner.

“What are my choices? “ the passenger asked

“Yes or No,” she replied

I got a new job at the bank, but I got fired on my first day. A guy came in and said he wanted to check his balance.  So, I pushed him over.

Toni Cuzzolino

I have been happily retired for 4 1/2 years....that's it for now

Franca Panacci

Retirement life is busy but simply wonderful. Spending time with our family, our children, and grandchildren.  Hope to travel again soon. Wishing everyone a happy and fun summer.

Betty Barr

We are sending prayers and good thoughts to Betty right now as she is having a very difficult time. “I’m dealing with my mom right now. She’s in last minute palliative care. She’s being moved to Oshawa, and we must clean out her retirement home.”

Leslie Bennett

Keeping well and enjoying being semi-retired with a part time HR Manager position for a small international distribution company in Markham (OK it was full time in COVID managing so many changes in a workforce, but hours are reducing now)!

Still live in Pickering with first grandchild on the way in August and fit in swimming a few times a week now that the gyms are open again.    Look forward to seeing other retirees especially the great gang in HR – miss everyone!

Terry Chadwick

My wife Sheila and I are well. We have helped our three grandkids with online learning when called upon. Our last vacation was March 2019. Our daughter Lisa, a nurse working through Covid had to postpone a vacation two years ago and is now looking forward to finally getting away.

Janice Napier

When I retired in January 2013, I wanted to volunteer to fill in some of my “free” time. After travelling for a couple of years, it was time to figure out the type of volunteering I would love to do. Janice has been a person who rescues dogs. She has a column in our June 2022 Newsletter. She will have another column in our next September Newsletter so stay tuned.

Marjorie and Gord Brown

Gord and I spent the winter in Florida. We enjoyed our  5 months with our Florida family doing boat trips and date nights with the group from the park and just relaxing.  We returned home April 15 and had no problem at the border. We had previously completed the Arrive  Canada app which made the  crossing at the border much easier.

However, we arrived in cold weather and a couple of snowfalls. Today is  Wednesday April 20th and we were off to the Upper Canada Mall to walk for exercise.  The Mall allows us to enter at 8 am before it is open to customers at 10 am.  After walking our 2 miles we have coffee with our group.

We would like to say thank you to the Enbridge Gas Retiree Club program for the gift of the keychain, bottle opener/nail clipper we found in our stack of mail upon our return.  Mailed to us by Mr. Warren Dickert.

Robin Pickett

My wife, Elaine, and I live on a 50-acre parcel of land that belonged to her parents before us. All-Ways Windy Farm, as we named it, is in south-east Grey County or about 20 kilometres south-west of Collingwood.

We hire a local farmer to farm the land for us.  Last year my wife got a small flock of chickens (I get to help) and we sell eggs locally to individuals plus some nearby stores.  I'm also President of the Feversham Agricultural Society which hosts a large Fall Fair each September.

Last August our daughter and son-in-law welcomed their daughter and our first grandchild into the world.  And this June our son and daughter-in-law

are expecting their first child, a baby boy.  They live in St. John's so it means a road trip to Newfoundland for Elaine and me which will be our third visit to the island since they moved there in 2018.

I look forward to reading about how everyone is doing and to the possibility of attending a social event soon.

Susan Clinesmith

When it was time to retire, I decided to leave Toronto and found the bit of land I was looking for on the Beamsville Bench on the Niagara Escarpment where I had a house built and just love it here. (Can see Toronto across the lake on a good day.)

I was in Florida in early March of 2020 but got home just before the Covid shutdown. My daughters live in Peterborough and Burlington, and I have a granddaughter who is graduating from Ottawa U. this year. Another granddaughter is in her second year at Laurier. Yet another granddaughter is starting high school. I have a grandson in grade 6 who plays soccer and is crazy over Lego.

I have always enjoyed fiber arts and quilt which was a great sanity saver during Covid! But will be glad to travel again.

Elaine Mills

Elaine lost her husband, Karl on April 19, 2022. Elaine and Karl have been married for 52 years. Lilly, Elaine’s daughter currently works for Enbridge. Please keep them in our thoughts.

Tara Seon

Since retiring in 2007 I have volunteered for two assignments (about 1.5 years total) with MSF (Doctors Without Borders) in South Sudan and Holland, the former enabling me to visit many countries in Africa. With friends, we started a charity - Malamulele Onward provides support and care to children with cerebral palsy in South Africa. I earned a Masters in Sociology, have been active locally in a club for seniors and was happy to have been approached to help get the GTA Lamplighters Club off the ground.

My ‘adventure travel’ style-preference (with my husband, friends, family – and alone) provided me unique perspectives of - and in - many of the countries I was introduced to by my high-school Geography teacher many, many years ago.

Bob and I love our two daughters dearly, as we do our three (soon to be four) grandchildren. We unashamedly admit to being besotted grandparents and it still amazes us we could love those little beings so unconditionally and completely.

Gerry Rieck

Gerry lost her husband Helmut; they had been married for forty-one years on May 9th. Helmut was a contractor (Nortown Natural Gas)for Consumers Gas/ Enbridge.  Gerry worked for Enbridge and Accenture before her retirement.  He is survived by Gerry, 5 children and 8 grandchildren.  Many of their family, friends and Enbridge employees attended the funeral on May 19th.

Ted Greatrix

My wife Mary Anne and I retired in January of 2013 and since we entered this new phase in our life, retirement has been wonderful. We have travelled across Canada both ways but our favourite province in this country, by far, is Newfoundland and Labrador. We have visited Newfoundland for six weeks each visit (2014 and 2017) and are going back this summer to stay in Norris Point for the month of August. We love the spectacular scenery, the culture and best of all, the people.

We live in Horseshoe Valley immediately adjacent to the 4,400-acre Copeland Forest. Mary Anne and I are active and enjoy our summer sports including mountain biking, road riding and hiking. In the winter we enjoy cross country skiing, downhill skiing, and hiking. We have usually taken two or three camping trips each year, favourite spots being Killbear and Algonquin Provincial Parks and especially to the parks along the east and north shores of Lake Superior.

We have four beautiful grandchildren, three close by here, a 15-year-old granddaughter, and 12- and 10-year-old grandsons and one granddaughter who was born in England in May of 2021. Last September we spent six wonderful weeks in England with our son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter.

Our three Ontario grandchildren are homeschooled and live close by which provides us with tremendous opportunities to spend time with them. Being the “outdoor grandparents”, we have enjoyed teaching them each of our sports and have also enjoyed taking them on an annual camping trip to Algonquin Park. This September we are planning to take them to

Temagami for their first wilderness canoe trip and are really looking forward to that.

Considering everything mentioned above and as we age, I am sure that everyone will agree, nap time has become increasingly important. Hi to all retirees and I wish everyone good health and happiness.
